Sewer Pipe Connections to Council Main Line

Most existing Whangarei properties in the urban centre have a sewer pipe connection available for them to connect to. Your connection would have been constructed at the time that the Council installed the main sewer line in your area.

How to Connect to an Existing Sewer Connection

If a sewer connection already exists from the Council main sewer line to the point of discharge on your property boundary, you can’t simply connect to it on your  own. Building consent approval will be required to connect to the point of discharge.

These are the steps to take to connect your property to the existing sewer line:

1. First check whether there is an existing sewer connection available for your property to hook into. Scroll down and I’ve made a little video on how to do this in under 30 seconds.

2. If you DO have a connection, then you will need to complete a building consent application and submit it to the Whangarei Council.

3. All building consent applications are now made through the Whangarei  Councils online system, AlphaOne. Register and complete the application form. You can find out more about this here: WDC Sewer Connections. You will require a ‘Proposed drainage Plan’ showing plans of how you’re going to connect to it. This can be done by either a Surveyor or a WDC Approved Licenced Drainage Contractor (yes, we can do this for you).

4. The approval process takes around 3 weeks. Once you have received your building consent approval, then you will need to engage a WDC approved drainage contractor (and yes, we are WDC approved) to connect your home to the
public sewer.

5. Finally, once work is completed, Council inspections are done and paperwork submitted to Council – you will be issued with a code of compliance.

SAME DAY CONNECTION

When we are installing sewer connections, to keep disruptions to a minimum, we aim to make sewer connections live on the same day we start the work. We will arrange all Traffic Management, Council inspections and supply you with an ‘As Built diagram’ which will be kept on the Council files for your property.

Quick Check to see if your property has an existing Sewer Connection available to hook up to

This connection is underground, so you will not be able to visually find it on your property. There are two ways to check whether your property has an existing sewer connection point available to connect to:

  1. Give the Whangarei Council a call and the customer service staff can check your property info.
  2. Visit the Whangarei Council map system (GIS MAPS) and look up our property. It will show whether there is a sewer connection existing for your site.

What if you Don't have an existing Sewer Connection available on your property

If NO sewer connection exists for your property and you need to construct one, then a Public Utility application must be made and approval given to create a new connection.

This will involve a development fee which will have be paid to the Council before approcal is given. This fee varies depending on where your property is located. Give the Council a call to see how much this is for your property.

Once your public utility approval has been received, you can apply for a building consent to construct and connect to the new connection.

This work must be done by a WDC licensed contractor. There are only a few drainlayers approved to do this work. We see many people hiring unqualified drainlayers, only to discover at the end of the project that Council will not sign off the work.

How much does it cost to connect to the Council Sewer line

There are a number of costs that will be incurred and they can vary a lot depending on:

1. Application fee for your building consent – This is payable when you submit your building consent application. Council will be able to calculate these costs for you before you start. It is generally based off the value of the work to be done and number of inspections needed. Estimate &1500 – $2000

2. Development fee – Whangarei council may require a development contribution to connect. This can vary depending on your location. Contact the Council to
ask how much this is for your property. For example, we were recently quoted $6500 + gst development fee for a property in Onerahi. Council Customer service staff will be able to give you a quote for this.

3. Drainage Contractor – cost to actually iinstall the connection and connect your house to that connection. Estimated connection costs vary between  $4000 – $12,000 + gst, but this can chaneg a lot depending on whether we need to create a new connection or the amount of traffic management involved.

If you have plans available, send them through to us. We can supply a fixed price quote for the work before you start the project.
