How to stop your home flooding in a storm

stormwater drainage - potecting your house in a flood

The 1 in a 100 year rain event last year had many people stressed out. From falling trees to flooding, we got to see the power of stormwater at its worst. The most common issue we get is when the stormwater runoff is flowing onto a neighbouring property.

Ignoring the problem can turn good neighbours into bad neighbours. We don’t want that.

Whangarei Council rules require you to deal with stormwater runoff on your own property as much as possible before allowing it to runoff.

Often we can’t stop it, but we can slow it down. Slowing the flow reduces the damage.

Our three most common solutions to slow heavy stormwater flow are:

1. Check that all your downpipes are connected to the stormwater line. You’d be surprised how often we find down pipes just running to the ground.

2. Slow the flow of water using rip-rap stones (like in the video). It creates a bit of an obstacle path for water and helps prevent wash away of land.

3. Use permeable surfaces in your landscaping rather than concrete paths and drives.

Highly recommend the team at Woods Plumbing and Drainage. We had a new septic system designed by Carey and installed by Zane’s team. The whole process was well communicated and executed. A pleasure to deal with and very professional. Cheers guys.

Zane and his team shifted a sewer line across our build site and set up installation for our build. They were great to deal with, and worked in well with the other contractors. Zane went the extra mile to make sure that everything worked seamlessly with the Council. We can't recommend Woods Plumbing and Drainage highly enough!

Zane and his team did a fantastic job of installing all the drainage on our extension project. They were polite, efficient, pleasant to work with, communicated with me very well to adjust things as we went along and finally left the site veery tidy. I also thought the price was very reasonable for a top notch job. Would highly recommend them for your drainage needs.
